Can you play SAND solo?
Officially yes, and the publisher is specific about it. But solo players are the most negative group in the game's reviews, and if you are deciding whether to buy, you should see both halves rather than one.
Correct as of Update #6 · 2026-08-03
Solo play is explicitly supported, and the publisher states the game was designed and balanced for solo. Crews run from 2 to 6 players; matchmaking is by crew size, so solo players are queued as solo rather than filled into a crew.
Confirmed on a first-party surface — the developer’s Steam announcements or the publisher’s support site.
Of the reviews that raise solo play, 68% are negative. Solo is the single most common complaint theme among players who mention it at all.
Drawn from attributed player reports or authorized community footage. This is experience-level evidence, not a confirmed fact about every build.
Both of those are true, and the gap is the useful part
The publisher is not spinning. Solo is a supported, balanced-for mode, and the matchmaking bracket exists to keep you out of crew lobbies. What that statement covers is the design. What it does not cover is what a solo run feels like against crews who can split roles — one driving, one on a turret, one watching the extraction. A solo player does all three in sequence.
So the honest answer is: solo is playable and intended, and it is the harder way to play. Neither the official line nor the review sentiment on its own tells you that.
What the review number does and does not prove
It proves that players who care about solo are disproportionately unhappy, and that they go looking for help — which is why this page exists. It does not prove solo is unviable. Review samples skew toward people motivated enough to write, and a negative review is a complaint, not a measurement. We are reporting a pattern in what players say, not a fact about the game's balance.
If you are buying specifically to play alone
Two things worth knowing before you decide. Extraction is the whole game and it is harder without someone watching your back — seeVoyage vs Storm Dive, and start in Voyage, where no timer forces the decision. And losing everything has a blunt official recovery path that hits solo players hardest, because the alternative to starting over is joining a crew that owns a Trampler — seewhat actually happens.
